How much to charge for lawn care: a pricing method for every service

6 min read · updated October 2026

The short answer

Charge what your time and materials cost plus the margin your business needs: price each service per visit from its time on site at your crew-hour cost, add materials at cost plus a markup, keep a minimum per visit, and use a trip charge for stops off your route.

The method in four lines

  1. Know your cost per crew hour (labor, equipment, overhead).
  2. Estimate time on site per service from lawn size and your production rate.
  3. Add materials (seed, fertilizer, mulch) at cost plus a markup.
  4. Apply your margin, then a minimum per visit and, where it applies, a trip charge.

Adjust for the property, not the customer

Slopes, obstacles and gated access add time. Use a percentage adjustment (for example +10% for a slight slope, +20% for a steep one) so the same rule applies to every lawn.

Tip: Write your adjustments down once and apply them the same way to every quote. Consistent pricing builds trust when neighbors compare notes.

Sell programs, not single visits

A season of weekly mowing or a five-round treatment program is easier to schedule and more valuable than one-off visits. Quote the price per visit and the schedule (for example "per visit, 1x per week, April 1 to November 15") so the customer sees exactly what they are agreeing to.

Questions

Should I show my prices on my website?

An instant estimate from the customer’s own address converts better than a price list, because it is specific to their lawn. Keep it worded as an estimate you will confirm.
