Questions

How much fertilizer do I need per 1,000 sq ft?

Divide the nitrogen you want by the product’s nitrogen percentage. For 0.75 lb of N with a 24-0-6 product: 0.75 ÷ 0.24 = 3.1 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft.

What do the three numbers on the bag mean?

The percentage by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P₂O₅) and potash (K₂O). A 50 lb bag of 24-0-6 holds 12 lb of nitrogen, no phosphate and 3 lb of potash.

Do state laws limit how much I can apply?

Often, yes. Several states limit nitrogen per application, ban phosphorus on established turf unless a soil test shows a need, and set blackout dates. Follow the label and your state’s rules.
